 Adapting Awana for your church

The Awana ministry can be adapted to fit the unique culture and needs of each church and community. While it may look different from church to church, your ministry will effectively reach kids for Christ when the following six principles are in place.

  1. An Awana ministry is centered on the gospel.
  2. It has high scriptural content.
  3. It is fun and exciting for young people.
  4. It is built on strong leadership.
  5. It trains children and youth to serve.
  6. It strengthens the church/parent partnership.

Here are some ideas you can use to reach kids for Christ.

Verse Cards for each Awana handbook

Send these cards home each week instead of sending the handbooks home.   If your group is learning one verse per week, working together, only purchase a handbook for the leader; none needed for the kids!  Print the verses on card stock and cut them apart to send home.

Handbook Time Alternatives

There are some options in how to conduct handbook time.  Our goal is for the kids to learn God's Word so that it will impact their lives.  Understanding and retention are more important than completing handbooks and earning awards.

Handbook Time Options    Learn three ways which can help your kids excel in handbook time.

Handbook Time Game Room   Rotate kids among rooms to recite, study and play games.  Great for churches with limited workers.

Handbook Time Game Room Reviews   Help for motivating your clubbers.

Achiever Activities  Help with motivating young people.

Ideas for Parental Involvement

Learning One Verse

Some clubs have all the kids work on the same verse each week.   Known as "Together We Move" or "Learning One Verse" this ministry allows leaders to focus attention on helping young people who need extra help memorizing and applying the Scriptures.  Here is some info about Learning One Verse; if you have questions or need more resources email us at  Help@AwanaMidAmerica.org

The Awana mission is to reach children everywhere with the gospel of Jesus Christ and engage them in lifelong discipleship. Our prayer is that all children and youth throughout the world will come to know, love, and serve Him. This starts with equipping leaders. That’s you. That’s now. Congratulations on taking the first step toward becoming the leader God meant for you to be.

Let’s look closer at what it means to lead a child to know, love, and serve the Lord Jesus Christ.

Know — Our desire is that each child will know who God is and know that they can have eternal life when they put their trust in the fact that Jesus died for their sins and rose again. See Philippians 3:10, John 17:3, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Colossians 1:9-10.

Love — The Lord desires intimacy with us. Our desire is to disciple kids and students to grow in their love towards God and others. See Ephesians 3:19, 1 John 4:7-12.

Serve — Serving Christ is a supernatural by-product of loving Him. Our desire is that all believers will experience the joy of serving God and others. See Mark 10:45, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Ephesians 2:10.
